Prabhu Pingali, director of the Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture and Nutrition (TCI) delivered a virtual seminar hosted by the South Asia Section of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) on October 25. The seminar was entitled, “How to Fight Hunger and Food Insecurity (And How Not To)—Lessons from South Asia.”

During the lecture, Pingali discussed South Asian countries’ success in reducing hunger and improving smallholder farmer incomes but noted that an overemphasis on staple grains like rice and wheat has had serious social, environmental, and climate-related costs.
