TCI Launches FAN 2020 Report on Ending Hunger in India

Hundreds of people across the world tuned in to watch the launch of the Tata-Cornell Institute’s new report, Food, Agriculture, and Nutrition in India 2020: Leveraging Agriculture to Achieve Zero Hunger (FAN 2020), on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. The virtual event featured an expert panel composed of Trilochan Mohapatra, Indian Council of Agricultural Research; Ramesh Chand, NITI Aayog; Purvi Mehta, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and Jacqueline Hughes, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, each of whom shared their thoughts on the report and discussed the issue of malnutrition in India.

The FAN 2020 report provides an analysis of India’s progress towards achieving the second sustainable development goal—zero hunger. It assesses the prospects for enhancing productivity and increasing farm income across India and emphasizes the need for continued investment in agricultural infrastructure.

“While India has made significant overall economic growth and has made significant progress on poverty reduction, we continue to lag behind on nutrition outcomes,” said Prabhu Pingali, director of TCI. “In the report, we argue that diet diversity and affordable access to nutritious foods is key to addressing both ends of the nutrition spectrum—undernutrition and overnutrition.”

FAN 2020 is the first in a series from TCI. Each report will provide periodic assessments of the food, agriculture, and nutrition situation in India.
