TCI Researchers to Discuss New Book on India’s Social Safety Nets
UPDATED Oct. 25: A recording of the book talk is now available on YouTube.
The authors of The Future of India’s Social Safety Nets: Focus, Form, and Scope will discuss their new book at a “Chats in the Stacks” book talk hosted by Cornell University’s Mann Library on Thursday, September 26. The event will be held from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in Mann Library 160 and is also accessible virtually via Zoom. Light refreshments will be served.
In The Future of India’s Social Safety Nets, TCI Director Prabhu Pingali and Research Associate Andaleeb Rahman unpack India’s social welfare programs in terms of their three essential aspects—focus (intended beneficiaries), form (transfer modalities), and scope (developmental objectives). They provide a comprehensive analysis of India’s safety net programs, combining insights from interdisciplinary scholarship on economic development, social protection, and the social policy process. The book assesses the achievements and shortcomings of these programs, while also proposing a new framework that can help foster human resilience through social protection.
The Future of India’s Social Safety Nets is an open access publication and can be downloaded for free from Springer Link.
