TCI Faculty Fellow Harold van Es received three honors from professional societies during CANVAS 2025, an annual gathering of the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America.

The Soil Science Society of America gave van Es the Soil Science Applied Research Award, recognizing outstanding achievement in applying research principles to solve practical problems in soil science. It also gave van Es the Soil Science Education and Extension Award, which recognizes soil scientists making outstanding educational contributions through activities such as resident, extension, or industrial education.

The American Society of Agronomy gave Van Es the Werner L. Nelson Award for Diagnosis of Yield-Limiting Factors. The award recognizes leadership and accomplishments in the development or implementation of diagnostic workshops or seminars, diagnostic checklists, new or improved diagnostic techniques, or new or improved visual aids supporting the diagnosis of limiting factors, as well as the long-term personal use of diagnostic techniques for identifying yield-limiting factors resulting in the application of site-specific measures.

“At this stage of a career, one can reflect on the scholarly accomplishments,” van Es said. “It is therefore a great honor to be recognized by my peers through multiple awards for research and education achievements.”

Van Es is a professor in the Soil and Crop Sciences Section of the School of Integrative Plant Science at the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. As a TCI faculty fellow, he is a contributor to the Institute’s projects on Optimizing Soil Health and Zero-Hunger, Zero-Carbon Food Systems.
